Danny Amendola Update – St. Louis Rams

According to multiple NFL sources, Danny Amendola will miss the remainder of the 2011 season with a torn muscle in his tricep.  This is just salt on the wound for the already struggling Rams and their fans.  Keep in mind Amendola was listed as Doubtful but leaning towards Questionable coming into Week 4 so things were definitely looking up for the Rams leading grabber.  This leaves a hole in the slot and at KR/PR that the Rams have been trying to fill with rookie Greg Salas but to no avail.  He’s inexperienced and doesn’t seem to be ready to make a major contribution to the Rams.

Trying hard to make a name for himself is Danario Alexander.  Once the Rams brought in Sims-Walker there was optimism amongst the team that their passing game was going to be one of the best in the NFL.  Losing Bradford’s go-to guy didn’t help matters and now they are stuck trying to find the missing piece of the puzzle.  Keep in mind Laurent Robinson was let go, then recently signed and is playing well for Dallas.  Donnie Avery, who looked as good as he ever had, was having a strong preseason but was released and recently signed by the Tennessee Titans.  So now the question becomes, “Who’s gonna take the lead in the Rams WR core?”

I’m not sure that’s an answer you are going to find with any ease.  The QB positon is filled.  Now it’s just a matter of execution.  If the Rams can get SJax at any level of reliable health they can still keep defenses honest and put themselves in a positon to make progress in what seems to be a path to a lost season.  The WRs, with the exception of MSW, Alexander, Gibson and rookies Pettis and Salas are anything but household names.  Although this will come as a benefit to the youngsters I wouldn’t expect any game changing performances from either.  I like the ability of Pettis over Salas.  Salas had some fumbling issues and he just isn’t showing that he has all the confidence in the world right now.  Don’t hound me if he comes up with a gem here and there, I just don’t believe he’s as talented as he was originally projected to be.

Your Waiver Wire additions, if you haven’t tried to replace DanAm already, should include Pettis and Salas but grab Pettis while he’s still floating under the radar.  Most of the Rams WRs were probably already drafted or taken due to the projected success Sam Bradford was given.  Someone may have given up on that and tossed Brandon Gibson or Danario Alexander to the Waiver Wire.  Obviously, if they are are still available, grab em’.
