If you had the season you hoped you would have, it’s playoff time! Here are some players who you should look at picking up if your team suffers an injury or one of your regulars is slumping.
Mikael Backlund (C – CGY) – owned in 10% of Yahoo leagues. The Calgary Flames have discovered that scoring goals is fun and that repeating it is a good idea. Backlund has been at the center of that, with 9 points (4G, 5A) in his last 7 games.
Ondrej Palat (LW – TB) – owned in 31% of Yahoo leagues. Palat has had a solid season, with 49 points (19G, 30A) in all 71 of the Bolts’ games. For the past bit he’s been absolutely on fire though. 12 points (5G, 7A) in the last 8 games is part of it. Even better, 3 of those points came on the power play and another 2 came playing a man down. Hits? 16 in those 8 games. The only place he won’t contribute is in penalty minutes.
Jimmy Hayes (RW – FLA) – owned in 2% of Yahoo leagues. The former Blackhawks farmhand has been making the most of his expanded minutes over the past couple of weeks. 6 points (3G, 3A) in the last 8 games, including a treacherous West Coast trip. The Panthers have a more favorable schedule the rest of the way, and Hayes looks to be a cornerstone to any offensive success they’ll have.
Ryan McDonagh (D – NYR) – owned in 67% of Yahoo leagues. How this guy isn’t owned in more leagues is beyond me. I traded Dion Phaneuf straight up for McDonagh in one of my leagues and the trade has proved fruitful. 12G, 27A, +7, 84 Hits, 121 Blocks, 13 PP Pts, 4 SH Pts, 2 GWG. There’s nothing not to love.
Chad Johnson (G – BOS) – owned in 19% of Yahoo leagues. I’m not sure the Bruins are going to lose another game, and Johnson is splitting starts with Rask down the stretch. His stats for the past 2 weeks: 4 wins in 4 starts, including a shutout; 1.25 GAA, .953 SV%. The only netminder with better stats over that time? Henrik Lundqvist.
