Buy Low, Sell High, Hold Steady (6/18/13)

Each and every week this season, we are going to take a look at a couple of heavily owned players who’s value has shifted in recent time. Turning perceived value into talent on the trade market is key to you fantasy success so let’s take a look at some fantasy baseball players to buy, sell or hold for Week 12 of the 2013 fantasy baseball season.

Buy Low – Homer Bailey (CIN)

A somewhat erratic commodity throughout his major league career, former first round selection Homer Bailey asserted himself as a top-flight fantasy option down the stretch in 2012, capped by a no-hitter in his second to last start of the season during head-to-head championship. Still, the good vibes from fantasy owners did not necessarily carry over into the 2013 preseason and Bailey was, on average, the 49th pitcher selected in spring drafts. He scuffled a bit out of the gates this season, specifically in his second start of the season when he allowed seven earned runs on nine hits over 5.0 innings pitched to a fierce Cardinal offense. Following that effort, Homer put up a 3.13 ERA over his next nine starts, striking out 75 batters with just 16 walks in 72.0 innings pitched. He was roughed up a bit in his last outing and is now sitting on a so-so 3.80 ERA and 1.14 WHIP on the season. All told, Bailey is the 41st starting pitcher on ESPN’s player rater, but he’s pitched much better than that in 11 of his 13 starts. Sure, the blowup outings count as well, but we are also looking at a player whose 2.68 FIP and 3.04 xFIP point to a fair amount of unfortunate luck in that 3.80 ERA. Homer’s walk rate is right where it’s been the last couple of season and he’s bumped his K% up to 23.8 (compared to 19.2 k% last year) as he’s significantly increased the use of his 93-MPH two-seamer (14.1% in 2012, 27.8 in 2013). Bailey is doing a nice job of carrying over the strides he made when he posted a 3.21 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 3.8:1 K/BB ratio over 103.2 second half innings pitched last season. His recent struggles do a nice job of masking a pitcher who has taken a huge step forward in his command and strikeout rate and by the end of the year, fantasy owners will reap the rewards. This is a top-30 pitcher right now and his numbers will soon reflect that sentiment. Take Homer’s brief hiccup as a chance to score the maturing hurler on the cheap.

Sell High – Dexter Fowler (COL)

One of the leagues breakout players in April (8 homers, 4 steals), Dexter has kept up his hot start to a certain extent, slashing at a nice .298/.395/.488 rate through 66 games this year. He did slump a bit after that sizzling first month, but the speed has remained consistent and Dexter has already matched his 12 steals from 2012. Beyond that, he’s batting a very nice .359 over his last 28 games with a ridiculous .450 OBP. Fowler has scored 25 runs in those 28 games and is looking like a lock to set career highs in hits, runs, RBI and homers and also has a good shot at eclipsing the 27 steals he racked up back in 2009. Fowler is also on pace to play in more than 145 games for the first time in his career, providing fantasy owners with consistent, bankable production. The issue moving forward with Fowler is really whether he can sustain the power pace he was putting on early in the season, and quite frankly, we are not buying that. Fowler slugged his eighth homer of the year back on April 29 and since then, he’s hit just two long balls in 151 at-bats. He will continue to get on base and score plenty of runs, but Fowler is currently pacing as a 20-homer, 30-steal bat and we’d be surprised if he hit either of those totals. There is no doubt that the lengthy absence of Troy Tulowitzki will negatively impact the Rox lineup, but Fowler is already looking a lot more like the player who put up a solid-but-not-elite .300-72-13-53-12 5×5 line in 2012 and finished as the 52nd best outfielder on ESPN’s player rater than the dominate power/speed threat we saw early this year. Yes, you can expect the speed to continue as Fowler has impressively improved his efficiency on the bases, but he’s not a top-20 outfielder. Fowler will remain productive, but there is plenty of room to sell and turn a profit here.

Hold Steady – Albert Pujols (LAA)

Pujols has become one of the more popular names to grace BretskyBall.com’s Fantasy Trade Analyzer lately, and it’s not a huge mystery as to why some owners are panicking. Albert was once again among the top first baseman drafted prior to the season and his production has been a bit disappointing. Albert’s .266/.334/.449 slash line would represent career lows pretty much across the board and his five-year downward trend is slugging percentage certainly speaks to an aging player with a diminishing power stroke. Still, Albert remains on pace for 25 home runs and 99 RBI, not quit the elite numbers you were expecting, but solid nonetheless. His injured plantar fascia has likely played a role, but Pujols intends to play through the pain, and he’s been doing so quite well of late, stroking the ball with authority on a regular basis. Since May 14, Albert is batting .303/.358/.516 with six homers and 22 RBI in just 31 games, numbers much more in-line with his performance of the past couple of seasons. Albert has passed the crown as the games most dominating hitter to Miguel Cabrera, but he remains a strong option at first base and to us, he’s still a top-5 player at the position. If you own Albert, hang on to the warming first baseman as you are much more likely to recoup excellent offensive production from the Angles slugger than you are to get full value in return.

Prospect Shredder: Wil Myers

Through the Fire and Flames

Last year, the city of Colorado Springs, Colorado and some surrounding cities experienced a horrific wildfire. The “Waldo Canyon Fire” caused the evacuation of over 32,000 people, consumed over 18,000 acres, and destroyed 346 homes. And while my heart broke for those people, especially the ones that lost everything, it was still a situation that didn’t affect me personally. And I think if you asked anyone in the same shoes that they’re response would be similar. “I feel bad for those people, but I’m glad it’s not me” would be the honest and natural human response from anybody not directly affected by any disaster such as this fire.

Well, this last Tuesday afternoon, the situation was flipped on it’s ear when a fire began to rage through Black Forest and caused my family, along with hundreds of others, to flee our homes and leave everything we know behind. I now faced the exact same situation, almost a year to the date of when the Waldo Canyon Fire started, but this time looking at it from the inside-out.

It’s an interesting feeling waiting around to see if your life is gonna change. The emotions are hard to describe, but I can tell you that, for the most part, I’ve maintained a sense of peace about everything. Now, being a man of faith I know where that peace comes from, but even if we had lost everything I know that at the end of the day it’s just stuff, and stuff can be replaced. The family is safe, we have a place to stay, foot to eat, and that’s what’s important. That and the fact that my wife was heads up enough to snatch my laptop. Good on ya’, babe!

And, as of today I’m overjoyed to say that the house is still standing. We get to return home this week, and we are extremely grateful that we have a house to go home to. Many are not as fortunate.

Thank you to all who prayed or passed along good thoughts. It was overwhelming the amount of tweets I received wishing my family and I the best. And thank you for allowing me the time to process all of this and to relay a few of the thoughts that raced through my head this week. Now, back to baseball…

Wil Myers

It’s been a long time coming for one of the top prospects in baseball as Myers probably should’ve been starting for the Royals last summer, but good things come to those who wait. And good things should be coming for fantasy owners as well. Myers has some very pro-ready tools and should contribute immediately.

Batting Average/OBP

Myers has demonstrated a keen batting eye and good patience at each level of the minor’s, but most importantly he has shown these in the upper levels. An injury in 2011 slowed his season and caused him to only hit .254, but a return trip through the Texas League in 2012 saw him hit .343 in 152 PA’s. Then, after being promoted to AAA Omaha, he hit .304 in 439 PA’s. His 2013 season started off slowly, but he’s rebounded nicely and was hitting .283 at the time of call up.

The approach can be a tad aggressive as evidenced by a K% above 20% each of the last three seasons, but he’s able to offset that with good pitch recognition. Along with striking out over 20% of the time at each stop the last 3 years, he’s also managed to keep his BB% slightly over 10% for that time as well. So while he will likely swing and miss some, he should keep his averages reasonable while getting on base at a good clip.

Myer’s plus power is his calling card. Last year, in 2012 he slugged a whopping .731 in his 152 PA’s at AA. That included 11 2B’s, 1 3B, and 13 HR’s; good enough for an eye-popping .388 ISO. He’s also hit a combined 38 HR’s at AAA the past two seasons and posted ISO’s of .250 and .238 at Omaha and Durham respectively.

Speed

Myers has average speed and only registered double digit steals once in his minor league career (10, back in 2010 at Low-A). However, he had already registered 7 by the time he was called up, so it’s probably safe to assume he would’ve landed in the 10-15 range had he stayed in AAA. He shouldn’t be counted on for a ton of steals, especially as the body matures, but he could be a double digit threat each year early on in his career.

Myers has very quick hands which allows his plus power to play to all fields. His swing can get a little aggressive, especially in 2 strike counts, but that’s really the only area of refinement the swing needs. He has a solid approach and good pitch recognition. Both the hit and power tools are a 6 at present and should play as such going forward. He lacks the quickness to play 3rd base and center field long term, but his strong arm and power potential give him a classic right field profile.

What To Expect

Myers has been pro-ready for over a year. He will likely struggle some at the plate, as most rookies do, and the averages may end up being a little unsavory to round out the year. But, his power should play from the jump and he could very well hit 8-10 HR’s to along with a handful of doubles. Unfortunately, due to some likely low averages and low steal counts, he’s only an add in deep leagues.

At maturity, Myers profiles as a middle of the order bat who should hit for solid averages (.275+) and will push for 25+ HR’s a year. He and Evan Longoria should make one of the fiercest power hitting combos in the league for many years to come.

Hello Everyone, welcome back….

Holy Moley!!! So there is the kid who got called up last weekend ,and since then has been doing nothing but dominating the MLB. He’s being compared to Bo Jackson, and if he somehow keeps this up he is worthy of the comparisons. No matter what team you support his call-up and performance has caught everyone’s attention.

So I….Oh yeah, in case you didn’t know I am talking about Yasiel Puig.

I received a barrage of emails this past week and many of them focused on strategy typed questions. I actually really enjoy answering these kinds of questions, so keep them coming guys. Since it’s near mid-season (ALREADY??) it is time to really start considering strategy, selling high, staying put, or making some power move trades. I had quite a bit of submissions so we’ll just get started. I may even write a strategy themed piece in the near future. Good luck this week everyone!

I think it was a play (albeit, a smart one) to put a fire under his rump. You notice what he’s done the last 7 days?? (6/14, 1 hr, 3 runs, and a .643 slg%)

Pick him up. He won’t be platooning much longer. He is turning the corner and grab him while you can! Oh, I’d probably drop Gausman for him. He’s going to be very good, but in a non-keeper league he may not be worth the risk. Good luck

DSEmpire_Chris @Fantsychillpony: Frustrating? Sure. Lame? No way. In fact I’ve done it before. It’s fantasy sports, and you play to win each and every week. If benching a player helps ensure this happens, so be it. Side, note I have done this and had it backfire. Last year I skipped 3 starts with a healthy lead on K’s, era and whip, and a tie in losses. My reliever blew a save costing me losses, and whip! Also, my 3 starters all won. You truly NEVER know.

Streaming can be frustrating, but it also means you can do the same. If yourself, and the rest of the league don’t like it, then join in, or place an add/drop limit. 5 per week seems reasonable to me. However, I think it’s part of the game, if not essential part of it.

From Alex R. via email: Hey chillpony, when do I need to start panicking, making trades, etc? I am currently 8th place, 10 games out of first place. I have Jason Kipnis and DustinPedroia. If I trade one of them I could plug Brett Gardner in to my Utility spot and hopefully get a pitcher. Am I panicking to do this?

DSEmpire_Chris@FantsyChillpony: 10 games seems like a lot, but all you need is a huge win, and you could keep climbing back. Now is the time when teams in the middle, or back end of leagues should start making moves. I like your thought process though. I would be just fine having Gardner as my utility. 2nd basemen are a commodity, so if you are willing to part with one of them aim high, a number 1 or 2 starter at least. You have some injuries, so once some of those guys come back you should be in better shape too.

I’d try to move Kipnis, but if you get offers for Pedroia, I’d be fine rolling with Kipnis at 2nd if you get an ace in return.

DSEmpire_Chris@FantsyChillpony: Ha ha ha. Honestly, it was from when I was in 6th grade. My buddies and I were listening to A Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy and Beastie Boys all the time. One day we thought, what would our rap names be if we were rappers? I thought, let’s be honest I am not intimidating, and would want to be something both cool and harmless. So ChillPony was my name. It stuck and I’ve been that ever since! I also love that it is never taken for twitter handles, gamertags, etc.

IDPwithBEE 2013 DB TIERS

Time to dive into the DB tiers of the IDP world; don’t get this confused with rankings. Unlike the LB’s and DL’s I’ve only done up to 5 tiers for DB with a bunch of them between 4 & 5; don’t mistake tiers 4 & 5 for least production as each have the potential to rise up and out-produce those in the tiers above. Of course the same can be said for those in the top 3 tiers, I just went with who will offer you the most upside and who provides you the best opportunity to win. A handful of rookies are in prime position to make a name for them in the IDP world. Here’s a breakdown of the tiers entering 2013.

Tier 01: Those who been there & done that and either can finish #1
Tier 02: upside tier with a few that could vault into tier 1 territory
Tier 03: a few rookies in prime opportunity, a sleeper and savvy vets
Tier 04: Those who’ve done it in the past & just maintain their numbers, limited upside just consistency
Tier 05: a handful of dynasty stashes, a CB whose lone value lies in return yardage league and a few have the upside while the rest put up numbers here and there
