NHL Daily Fantasy Hockey DFS Plays and Goalie Rankings – 3/14

If you’re a daily fantasy sports player you know there are few things more important than finding good value plays to compliment the higher priced guys. There’s usually no way you’ll finish in the money without a couple of low-salary guys producing above their salary.

Each day I’ll bring you a rundown of some players you may want to use in your daily leagues. They will include a few top plays (high salaried players a notch below the obvious choices – Crosby, Ovechkin, Neal, etc.), some mid level plays, and a good amount of the most important ones – value plays (players most likely to outperform their salary).

While I’ll feature different DFS sites as a guide for salaries each day, you’ll find that most sites will have the individual players on a similar salary scale.

I will also include overall goalie rankings for today’s games at the bottom of each post. The rankings are not based on salary, but just as an idea of how I feel each goalie will do compared to the other starters for the night.

Please note that with daily hockey there is constantly new information to consider. New line combos, late changes to starting goalies, healthy scratches, etc., are an everyday occurrence.  Check back often for any updates.

Salaries used today are from Draft Street.

NOTE: As I write this post today and go through all the DFS sites I play on, I’m noticing the salaries of a lot of the players I’m using vary greatly from site to site – to the point where some value plays on one site are grouped just below the top salaried players on other sites. That’s something I usually don’t encounter. I still used most of the players listed below, but there is a little more variation from site to site today. As always, check salaries on your site(s) and grab the values when you can.

Tonight’s games:

San Jose at NY Islanders – 7 PM ET
Vancouver at Washington – 7 PM ET
Edmonton at Detroit – 7:30 PM ET
New Jersey at Florida – 7:30 PM ET
Nashville at Chicago – 8 PM ET
NY Rangers at Winnipeg – 8 PM ET
Calgary at Dallas – 8:30 PM ET
Anaheim at Colorado – 9 PM ET

Top Plays

RW Alex Ovechkin – WAS ($16,951) – First, the bad: Ovi has no points and is a minus-1 in each of his last four games. That’s not very Ovi-like. He’s still the highest salaried RW on DS but I’m betting on him snapping out of his slump tonight. He also has the potential to get you some points on SOG alone.

C Anders Lee – NYI ($11,886) – This is a weird one. He’s only a “top play” here because of the price (8th highest center). He’s all over the place on DFS sites and I actually don’t like his salary on DS tonight, but still used him because I found some value elsewhere. If you can find him on sites that just use total stats instead of nightly potential for their salary I’d jump on him as a great value play (as I did on most sites). He’s likely to play on the top line with Okposo and Nielsen tonight, at least for most of the game.

Mid Level Plays

LW Brandon Saad – TBL ($9,991) – He’s priced just out of the top 10 left wingers but has the potential to outperform a few of them tonight. He has a point in each of his last three games while firing 15 SOG in that span.

D Shea Weber – NSH ($9,201) – On sites that count blocked shots as a category it’s wise to grab some d-men that can not only get in the way of a good number of shots, but also produce offensively. Weber is a perfect example of that type of player. He has 42 points, 22 PP points, 140 blocks, and 142 shots on goal. Even with the potential for a poor plus/minus, his numbers should still be on the plus side and he comes at a price that is eighth among defensemen.

D John Carlson – WAS ($8,450) – Like Weber, Carlson will put up numbers across the board while blocking a ton of shots. My other play here was Brent Seabrook at a slightly lower salary for similar numbers, but Carlson won the coin toss.

G Jimmy Howard – DET ($17,573) – As the 17th ranked goalie according to salary it’s hard not to like Howard tonight. Detroit has dominated the Oilers lately, going undefeated in their last seven at home and 12-0-1 in their last 13 overall. Edmonton is playing their third game in four nights on the road. Howard is 9-1-2 with a 1.96 GAA against Edmonton. The Red Wings’ injuries are a concern, but I’m hoping the Oilers are out of gas and Detroit continues their recent trend against them.

Value Plays

C David Legwand – DET ($7,773) – He has been pretty good since going to Detroit and has had solid numbers all season long. The injuries keep mounting for Detroit, so someone has to score and Legwand can do that. The matchup is good and the salary is even better.

LW Tuomo Ruutu – NJD ($5,872) – Playing on the top line with Jaromir Jagr has certainly helped Ruutu lately, but his price is still pretty cheap. With four points in his last two, he’s very capable of producing well over his salary, and the matchup tonight is a decent one.

RW Daniel Alfredsson – DET ($6,192) – He’s been slumping lately with five consecutive point-less games. ..but that’s usually where you can find the value. Alfredsson is still counted on to be a top producer for the Wings and he is still part of their top PP unit. It’s a bit of a risk play but it has the potential for high reward.

LW Jamie McGinn – COL ($5,523) – I usually try to grab another d-man for flex/utility spots on sites that count blocks, but there weren’t many that stood out at a good salary – Dan Girardi, Dan Hamhuis, Brian Campbell were among the better ones. So I grabbed McGinn, who is playing on the top line with Duchene and O’Reilly. That’s nice production potential for a bargain basement price.

My Draft Street Roster For Tonight

C David Legwand $7,773
C Anders Lee $11,886
LW Brandon Saad $9,991
LW Tuomo Ruutu $5,872
RW Alex Ovechkin $16,951
RW Daniel Alfredsson $6,192 Teemu Selanne $3,304**
D John Carlson $8,450
D Shea Weber $9,201
FLEX Jamie McGinn $5,523 Mats Zuccarello $8,973
G Jimmy Howard $17,573

$26 in salary remaining.

** – It appears Selanne will get a shot at the top-line spot tonight vacated by Penner. Slight downgrade from Alfredsson, but the salary was hard to pass up. It also allowed a slight upgrade at Flex from McGinn to Zuccarello. I don’t normally like changes once my lineup is in (unless there’s an injury or scratch), but I gotta use this opportunity to get Teemu into my lineups at least one more time.
