The NHL will be going on a mini break in a few weeks for the holidays. During the meantime, enjoy your fantasy success or failure. No matter where you stand at this point of the season, keep trying and it will all work out. Some players are still trying to make a name from themselves and some of them have been on fire lately.
Dylan Strome: Arizona Coyotes: He might have only scored one goal against the New Jersey Devils on Saturday Night, but Strome is going to be a star in the making when he gets hot. Strome has only played in six NHL games this season. He has scored one goal and his plus/minus is 1. He and Clayton Keller will have a strong connection. It wouldn’t be surprising if Strome gets rolling after tearing it up in the AHL. Strome is owned in 54% of Fantrax Leagues. He has 10.65 fantasy points so far this season.
Derek Stepan, Arizona Coyotes: Despite the possible emergence of Strome, it most likely will not stop Stepan from putting up good numbers. He has scored five goals and recorded 13 assists in 30 games so far this season. His plus/minus is -8. Despite Arizona starting off bad, they aren’t the worst team in the NHL anymore. Stepan is owned in 59% of Fantrax Leagues. He has 135.6 fantasy points so far this season.
Mikael Backlund, Calgary Flames: Depth scoring is very important in order for the Calgary Flames to succeed. Backlund has scored seven goals and recorded 11 assists in 26 games for the Flames so far this season. His plus/minus is -4. Backlund is the second or third line centerman for the Flames. He is owned in 63% of Fantrax Leagues. Backlund has scored 107.6 fantasy points so far this season.
Austin Watson, Nashville Predators: The Predators continue to play solid hockey as of late. They are neck-and-neck in the standings with the St. Louis Blues and Winnipeg Jets in the Central Division. In 24 games this season, he has scored three goals and recorded an assist. His plus/minus is -1. Watson is owned in 16% of Fantrax Leagues. He has 51.8 fantasy points so far this season.
Ryan Dzingel, Ottawa Senators: Dzingel is one of the offensive surprises this season for the Senators. He scored two goals in a 6-5 victory against the New York Islanders on Friday Night. Dzingel has scored eight goals this season which is the third most on the team. He also has recorded three assists in 25 games this season. His plus/minus is -5. Dzingel is owned in 17% of Fantrax Leagues. He has 48.75 fantasy points so far this season.
Paul Byron, Montreal Canadiens: The Canadiens have been on a resurgence as of late. They have won five straight games including Saturday Night’s 10-1 victory against the Detroit Red Wings. Byron scored a hat trick in the game. Byron has scored nine goals and recorded four assists in 28 games so far this season. His plus/minus is 3 this season. Byron is owned in 23% of Fantrax Leagues. He has 79.5 fantasy points so far this season.
Jordie Benn, Montreal Canadiens: He isn’t the goal scorer like his brother because Jordie is a defenseman and Jamie is a forward. Jordie has been a major part of the Canadiens resurgence as of late. He has scored three goals and recorded four assists in 27 games so far this season. Benn scored a goal in the 10-1 rout on Saturday Night. His plus/minus is 2. Benn needs to be one of the other defenseman to step up because Shea Weber can’t be the only defenseman scoring for Montreal. Jordie is owned in 11% of Fantrax Leagues. He has 50.25 fantasy points this season.
Kris Russell, Edmonton Oilers: Despite trying to clear the puck in a game last week against the Toronto Maple Leafs, it went into his own net as the Oilers lost the game 5-4. Other than that, Russell had a good week for the Oilers. He scored one goal and recorded three assists and also had a plus/minus of 2 this past week. Russell has scored two goals and recorded 10 assists in 27 games so far this season. His plus/minus is 3 on the year. Russell is owned in 23% of Fantrax Leagues. Russell has 66.75 fantasy points so far this season.
Josh Morrisey, Winnipeg Jets: Morrisey is known for checking people into the boards, but he has been playing better offensively as of late. Morrisey recorded a couple of assists over the past week. He has recorded six assists in 27 games this season. Morrisey has also scored three goals and his plus/minus is 10. He is one of the reasons why the Jets are most likely the best team in the NHL right now. Morrisey is owned in 49% of Fantrax Leagues. He has 65.4 fantasy points so far this season.
Goalies: Scott Wedgewood, Arizona Coyotes: Isn’t it funny that Wedgewood was traded from New Jersey to Arizona earlier in the season and he shutouts his former team? Arizona won the game 5-0 against them on Saturday Night and Wedgewood had 27 saves in that game. He played again the next night and made 42 saves in a losing effort against the Vegas Golden Knights (3-2). Wedgewood’s record is 3-4-3 with a .918 save percentage and a 2.68 GAA, along with one shutout. He is owned in 21% of Fantrax Leagues. Wedgewood has 37.3 fantasy points so far this season.
Joonas Korpisalo, Columbus Blue Jackets: Despite having Sergei Bobrovsky on the roster, Korpisalo is a reliable backup for the Blue Jackets. If Bobrovsky ever missed some time, Korpisalo would be the starter. Korpisalo made 25 saves for Columbus in a 4-2 win on Friday Night against the Anaheim Ducks. His record this season is 3-3 with a .907 save percentage and a 2.81 GAA. He is owned in 27% of Fantrax Leagues. Korpisalo has 22.2 fantasy points so far this season.
Tristan Jarry, Pittsburgh Penguins: I try very hard not to repeat players weekly but Jarry’s is worth repeating. He took over for Matt Murray last Monday Night after Murray went down with a lower-body injury. He will be sidelined for the next couple of weeks. Jarry made eight saves in relief against the Philadelphia Flyers. He stopped all 34 shots on Friday Night in a 4-0 victory against the Buffalo Sabres for his first career shutout and he stopped 32 shots the next night against the same team in a 5-1 win. Jarry’s record is 4-0-2 with a 1.99 GAA and a .937 save percentage. He has 74.6 fantasy points so far this season. Jarry is owned in 57% of Fantrax Leagues. Fantasy owners might want to run to the computer since he is being picked up in 22.7% of Fantrax Leagues.
