Tournament Recap
Joel Dahmen won his first PGA Tour title this weekend, shooting twelve under over four rounds. Dahmen had missed three straight cuts leading up to this event and struggled for the entire season. Dahmen was coming off the best season of his career and left wondering what happened between the seasons. Dahmen has talent; now that he has back on track, I would not be surprised if he plays well the rest of the year.
Sam Ryder Finished 2nd at Corales, making back-to-back top-ten finishes for Sam. Ryder has yet to win on the PGA Tour; he will tee it up at Valero this week in hopes of making it into the Masters’ field.
Danny Willett finished 8th this weekend at Corales. It’s hard not to notice a former Masters champion earning a top ten finish just two weeks from the Masters. Willett has struggled since winning the Masters but seems to be coming into form as of late. If he plays well this week at Valero, he may be a force at Augusta.
Billy Horschel won the Dell match play this weekend, his sixth win on the PGA Tour. Horschel has competed for majors in the past but tends to fade in big moments. At thirty-four years of age, I question if Horschel has the star power to get the job done at a major.
Scottie Scheffler lost in the final match at the Dell this weekend. Scheffler is one of the most talented players on Tour without a win and is likely to break through any moment. The former rookie of the year has the talent to become a star in the future.
Prospect Watch
Justin Suh – Continues to play well, making his third straight cut this weekend. Suh finished T28shooting a low round of 68. Suh has six starts on the PGA Tour this season, and only one missed cut. Keep an eye on him going forward; he has superstar potential.
Andy Ogletree – Former Masters low amateur continues to lose his luster with another missed cut this weekend. Ogletree shot 74-75, making seven straight rounds over par. Look for Ogletree to get fewer sponsors exemptions and be forced to prove himself on the Korn Ferry Tour from now on.
Adam Svensson – Won for the second time in his career on the Korn Ferry Tour this weekend. Svensson has played on the Korn Ferry Tour for several years but seems to be breaking out this season finally. With 10 top 25s this season, Svensson moves into12th in the 25 rankings and is in line to earn a PGA Tour card in the fall.
Davis Thompson – Finished T16 this weekend at Old Waverly, shooting 70-75-70. Far from Thompson’s best performance, but the talent is there. Thompson has the elite ability at the collegiate level and has already posted a round of 66 on the PGA Tour.
Valero Texas Open Picks
Ryan Moore – Top 20 each of last three starts here, including a third-place finish in 2019.
Chase Seiffert – First start in San Antonio, playing the best golf of his career with three straight top 20s.
Tony Finau – The most talented player in the field gets back on track after a poor match play performance.
Scottie Scheffler – One of the most talented in the field, made the finals last week in match play.
Danny Willet – Finished 8th last week; maybe the former Masters champion is finally figuring it out.
